How Plants Changed My Life

How Plants Changed My Life

Having plants is such a breath of fresh air, literally. They fill my home with a refreshing outlook, self-care vibes, and a certain tenderness you can’t get anywhere else. I used to love walking through the flower section, combining and mixing them up and hoping the person behind me would buy them and think of how pretty they were. I remember my grandmother, going out into the yard on a blazing summer day to water her babies and how mad she would be if someone walked through them, or how the dog would get in so much trouble for digging around them after all of the work she put in. These plants weren’t just something growing in the ground, I learned that they were a reflection of the life of those taking care of them.

Having plants is a reflection of you. Plants remind you to water them, clip them, move them to larger pots, when they need sunlight, and when they are dehydrated. Naturally, as you take care of the plants you are reminded to take care of yourself. One night, I was restless. My boyfriend was sound asleep, Netflix was asking if I was still there, and I needed a snack. I walked through the kitchen looking for something to munch on. While I was digging, I noticed my bamboo looked a bit frail and had browned on the edges of a couple of its’ leaves. At that moment, I realized they needed water. They hadn’t been loved on in about 10 days.

In the process of watering them I was reminded that I needed some water myself. That water was some of the best water I have had. Not because it was extremely good, although it was, but because I was simply taking care of myself, didn’t munch through the night, and my skin was glowing the next morning. Taking care of them reminded me to take care of myself.

Let’s be honest, some days we get so tied up in “life” that we forget to breathe, eat, and sometimes sleep. It’s crazy that we need reminders to take care of ourselves when our bodies speak to us so vividly. Having plants helps to hold you accountable without words. They are daily reminders of our lives by reflecting our behaviors.
